Everything seems to have ground to a halt now - it looks as if I will end on 461 for the year (451 moths and 10 butterflies).

318 species, hot sunny summer days and plenty of new moths for me.

Looking forward to 2015 now!
Added a couple SPRAWLERS recently.. Sadly for this list though some of them were not in the garden and an even larger number not in this country.

So, my garden additions for the last month, in what is going to prove my worst yearly total since I started mothing, are as follows:

220. Spruce Carpet
221. Common Wave
222. Dark Sword-grass
223. Feathered Gothic
224. Black Rustic
225. Blair's Shoulder Knot
226. Large Ranunculus
227. Beaded Chestnut
228. Lunar Underwing
229. Vine's Rustic

None are new for the all-time garden list.

Also, I've had a few ids/confirmations back from June/July, adding the following to the list:

230. Emmetia marginea (lifer)
231. Monopis weaverella
232. Bucculatrix nigricomella (lifer)
233. Batia unitella
234. Teleiodes vulgella
235. Blastobasis lacticolella
236. Batrachedra preangustana
237. Argyrotaenia ljungiana
238. Holly Tortrix (Rhopobota naevana)
239. Scoparia pyralellaDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00362910513148365379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6696139303843937500.post-18569262487196531212014-09-28T06:22:00.000-07:002014-09-28T06:22:03.230-07:00Those lovely moths of autumnAlthough there's always a tinge of regret when June, July and early August have gone and the chances of those special migrant species declines, one compensation is the arrival of those lovely moths of autumn. These are a few of the recent visitors to my garden trap taking my total for the year to 444 (434 moths + 10 butterflies)
The weather has been poor for mothing and new-for-years hard to come by. That said, there have been some special moths this month. I won't be mothing for most of September/October so my total for the year of 411 will have to stand for a while.

With the help of one or two gen dets my total has just managed to reach 400 (390 moths + 10 butterflies). It would have been nice to reach that landmark with a very special moth - but it was just a Firethorn leaf Miner. Attached are a few of the latest additions to the list.
Among those were a handsome Vapourer, a female Bulrush Wainscot, Lunar-spotted Pinion, Least Carpet and Nut-tree Tussock; while familiar species we were glad to see included Drinker, Eucosma cana and Maiden's Blush.
August for the time being has gone rather quiet, with an abrupt end to the warmer weather, although recent additions to the garden list have included nice species such as Oblique Carpet, Tawny-barred Angle and Twin-spotted Wainscot. All of which leaves my current total as 368: 352 moths and sixteen butterflies.

Finally I got a Garden Tiger
Scarce around here and a 6th for Norfolk! The day flying Nemophora fasciella .. Plus a nationally scarce Square spotted Clay (my second record following one last year)Sacha Barbatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09349496187354651154noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6696139303843937500.post-21221912647360331622014-08-03T07:06:00.002-07:002014-08-03T07:06:53.186-07:00July - A Good Mothing MonthThis was the best July so far in 6 years of mothing. There were several new for garden macros including Birch Mocha, Scorched Carpet, Sand Dart and Small Purple-barred. Also nice to get were Scarlet Tiger and Least Carpet. Some of the nicer micros were Cydia amplana, Oncera semirubella, Gold Triangle and a new one, Catoptria margaritella.

Let's hope August carries on as well as July.
I've been trapping in the garden since 2006 and never attempted a garden year list before so this has been quite an eye opener. Most recent addition to the garden list has been a long awaited Jersey Tiger.
Highlights since my last post have been Waved Black and Barred hook-tip (both new to the garden) - but lots of other welcome visitors including Barred Rivulet, Least Carpet, Agapeta zoegana, Cochylis roseana, Eudemis profundana, Grapholita janthinana, Pine Leaf-mining Moth and Small China-mark. My latest total as at 1st August is 381 (371 moths + 10 butterflies) - grahamc (Leicestershire)
Still a trickle of new species arriving in the garden - meaning that July looks like being another good month.

I suppose the highlight recently has been a Grass Emerald which is quite a rarity in VC55 and had not been seen away from its regular haunts for 20 years until this one popped up on the night of the worst thunderstorms and heavy rain. Much more common but new to the garden trap was a Latticed Heath. I see it day flying locally from time to time, but it had never visited the garden before. The 'small stuff' included Acleris holmiana (only my second), Aspilapteryx tringipennella and Monochroa lucidella, whilst the Old Lady could certainly not be classed as 'small'. Silky Wainscot, Small Rufous and White Plume were other very welcome recent visitors - all of which leaves my total on 357 (347 moths and 10 butterflies)

June was a record month in my Leicestershire garden, and July has already produced some new species. Some of the ones that I don't often see include Brown-line Bright-eye, Dingy Shears, Green Arches, Lunar Marbled Brown, Marbled White Spot, Parachronistis albiceps, Semioscopis steinkellneriana, Teleiodes luculella and Pinion-streaked Snout - but the highlight of the year so far for me was Evergestis limbata only the second record for VC55 - and the first was from my garden too! My present total is 307 (301 moths and 6 butterflies)

Thanks Tristan - having fun!

Possibly the two most notable individuals of the month were both new to the garden: a Metalampra italica on the 21st, and a Toadflax Brocade on the 26th: both of them (the micro especially) quite recent additions to the British list, and expanding their range (and both recorded earlier than mine by Adam Hartley, who posts on this blog and is about a mile south of me). We've also had good catches of hawkmoths (Poplar by a long way the most common, but Elephant and Eyed also showing up quite often), and of course Heart and Dart, Uncertain and Celypha lacunana have been numerous. The pattern of species being rather earlier than in previous years (and in some cases, earlier than field guides would suggest) has continued, with for example our first Mother of Pearl (Pleuroptya ruralis) being found on the 27th, as opposed to 15th July last year.

Perhaps the most spectacular species of the month were our first Beautiful Golden Y on the 8th, and a Lilac Beauty on the 18th, though in some ways it's invidious to pick out a 'favourite'. Anyway - it's been pleasantly busy, and we hope for more from July: June leaves us with a total of 270 all told: 259 moths and eleven butterflies.
Epinotia bilunana was a first for Portland, and Pammene fasciana, a second. Ethmia dodecea, although becoming more common on Portland, was a first for the Garden and a nice little moth. Spatalistis bifasciana was a second for the garden.

Garden totals so far: 227
New species for the year have
been piling in recently after a great month of moths. A couple of moths new to
Bedfordshire turned up at the end of May: the Pauper Pug and the micro Ancylis uncella, although the latter was
on the reserve not in the gardens so can’t be included in the challenge! Other
highlights were a Red-necked Footman, of which we had the 5th and 6th
records in the county last year; this being the 7th record. Our 200th
lepidopteran turned up in the toilets of all places and was the jazzy micro Chrysoclista linneella, which would have
been feeding on the lime trees just outside and happens to be the 4th
record for Beds. and a nationally notable species!

Dark Arches, Heart & Dart and
Heart & Club have been dominating the trap recently and we’ve had an
assortment of Rustics. Some species have been turning up earlier than expected,
including the Rosy Footman (9th June) and Buff Footman (17th
June). The butterfly count is also on the rise, with Painted Lady and Marbled
White being recent additions, although we’re still yet to see any Small and
Large Whites – hopefully we’ll catch the second broods. No Silver Y yet either,
but Hummingbird Hawk-moths have been spotted on quite a few occasions.
