Hi All,
Another post from (very) sunny Warwickshire! I'm afraid this one is a plea for some ID help with those masters of the "Little Brown Job" trick, the pugs...
Yesterday morning, I found three of them in the vicinity of the mothtrap. I was unable to identify them at the time, but I expected that with some okay(ish) shots and a bit of effort with the field guide, I would be able to sort them out.
Nope!
Actually, I'm not even sure whether they are the same species, or whether I have two (or even three) different ones! My best guess is that Nos 2 & 3 are the same, but 1 is different. I think No 1 may be a Brindled Pug, but I'm still baffled by the other two...
I'd be really grateful for any ID help. Thank you so much!
Here they are:
Pug #01
Pug #02
Pug #03
Happy trapping, everyone!
They could be Brindled Pug, but Pugs are a nightmare :(
ReplyDeleteThanks very much - they are indeed!

ReplyDeleteI agree, I hate pugs too. Would rather have micro's to ID. Speaking of which, I haven't had any micros this year yet :(
ReplyDeleteOnly a couple of micros here too - but that's another story... ;-)
DeleteYes...pugs...lbjs of the moth world.
ReplyDeleteCan I recommend this identification guide...

(nothing to do with me, just that it's been recommended to me in the past...)
Thanks for this - looks like a great document!
DeleteI think they're all Brindled. Mottled has been recorded down here in Dorset (and would be fresh specimens) but these are all worn and been around the block! Not heard of any Common as yet.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Les though pugs are even tricker from a photo than in the hand and Brindled / Oak-tree are very hard to separate and I usually dissect them to decide
