Catches have been excellent this week with some really lovely moths which have taken my total to 210. Moths like the Leopard, Pine Hawk, Coxcomb Prominent, Ruby, Scarlet and Garden Tigers to name but a few. However, I am stuck on these two and would really appreciate some help IDing them.
I'm guessing this might be some kind of thorn, but I can't find it anywhere.
Thanks in advance guys!
CT :-)
Your second moth looks like a worn Scalloped Oak to me :-)
ReplyDeleteCould the lower one be Endotricha flammealis (a Pyralidae)?
ReplyDeleteThe bottom one is Endotricha Flammealis. The top one is a Coleophora spp and no id without gendetting it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the replies, this is such a great blog to be part of. I've just googled the first one and think it might be this version Coleophora lutipennella. What does gendetting mean please? (new to mothing and haven't heard the term before).
ReplyDeleteI've learnt something new today, and those two take my tally to 212 :-)
Yep, I should pay more attention to size (and perhaps detail) ;-)
ReplyDeleteGendetting means looking at the genitals in more detail (usually by dissection under a microscope)....
Ah, I thought it was probably something like that. Thanks Tristan :-) And apologies- I should have noted the size on the first one.
